Skin and Bone
Written and directed by Everett Lewis Cleveland Cinematheque
Reviewed by Dawn E. Leach "Skin and Bone is about losing your soul. No, no, wait... It's about giving your soul away and then rationalizing the loss as a bonus. This is self-delusion."
This is how writer and director Everett Lewis describes his film about male prostitutes in Los Angeles who specialize in fantasy scenarios.
The hustlers are all out-of-work actors "who are struggling to make a buck in between auditions. Their ruthless agent, Ghislaine, manipulates her workers into performing acts they aren't comfortable with. When they try to quit, she arranges grisly. deaths for them.
"The story's a metaphor for experiences I suffered (attempting to make a film at an evil film company)," Lewis explains, "but it seems to me that the dilemma of possessing desire over which another entity has a measure of control creates jeopardy for anyone with desire (which is everyone, probably.)"
Lewis may have bitten off more than he can chew with this film, but he gets an A for effort. The plot hinges on Ghislaine's character, which unfortunately, is one of the film's weakest points. The character seems to carry the unwieldy responsibility of representing "The Establishment" and all that's wrong with Hollywood and big corporations. She's made even more implausible by the amateurish performance of Nicole Dillenberg, who just doesn't pull off the role convincingly.
On the other hand, actor “b.” (Barry) Wyatt
KULA
gives an enticing performance as Ghislaine's star hustler, Harry. He handles the sex fantasy scenes with flair, and his character's palpable moral conflict draws the viewer into the story.
Another notable offering is Alan Boyce, who plays the novice hustler Dean. Gangraped at 14, Dean ran away from home and ends up taking the hustling gig out of desperation. His boyish good looks, his charming innocence and his emotional vulnerability are an irresistible combination.
Skin and Bone is a low budget film, but a decent selection among B movies. The film is well-shot and the editing makes good use of the footage. Unfortunately, the sound quality is poor in some places, and there are stretches of dialogue that are hard to follow.
It wins points for titillation: A fair amount of the film consists of buff young men playing out various sexual fantasies in nude or semi-nude states. Also in the plus column, the music is by Pansy Division.
The running time is just shy of two hours, but some slow spots make it feel more like three. Some disturbing and unpleasant images, particularly towards the end, make parts of the film hard to stomach.
The film artfully avoids a gay-negative slant, even while showing heterosexual hustlers' discomfort at catering to gay clients, and a gay-bashing murder.
The film's message about the price of selling one's soul, while heavy-handed at times, is still thought-provoking.
It's not bad for a low-budget flick.
Skin and Bone will be showing at the Cleveland Cinematheque, 11141 East Blvd. in Cleveland's University Circle, at 8:45 pm February 4 and 9:20 pm February 5. For ticket information, call 216-421-7450.
